Epic Inception's Hidden Clue

Watch this video and find out what happens if you slow down Piaf's song "Non, Je ne regrette rien" that we hear in the movie every time someone has to wake up! Coincidence?? Well, I don't think so...

Shutter Island

As you've already figured out I LOVE controversial movies... Even though when you're going to the cinema you have to face the fact that there might be some non-thinking, very irritating people who find it a good idea to discuss the movie right where they are, laugh or even scream in the room, without giving a damn about the others. Anyway, you have to take your chances...

Back to the subject, when I tried to discuss Shutter Island with my friends (back at home..), I got the same inexplicable and surprising feeling that there was no point of concertation. It was like we've watched a completely different movie! Again I'm going to describe my point of view. The "Apple of discord" of course, was whether Teddy Daniels (Leonardo Di Caprio) was imagining the whole story or he was a victim of some kind of conspiracy against him.

I think that the key to that solution is what Teddy says to his doctor at the last scene of the movie. He says: " Which would be worse, to live as a monster or to die as a good man?" So far everything is messed up, but I think this quote explains everything. Teddy had really done all those things and he remembered the whole picture finally, after his denial to do so, because of the traumatic effect the past drilled on him. He felt responsible so he tried to misrepresent all the memories in his head so as to feel a little better. The process his doctor have put him into succeeded, so Teddy remembered everything. He couldn't stand it though, so he chose lobotomy. In this way, the monster he thought he hid inside him would die, so he could "live", if you can describe it as "life" this kind of situation, without remorses, without thinking at all. He would have been atoned.

About Donnie...

I watched Donnie Darko a couple of days ago. I know I was a little late, but it's amazing how this film made me stay awake for several nights after. Well, when the movie finished I thought the end was pretty obvious. After a little search I found out that no one else saw what I saw. In fact there were so many different opinions about what happened. That's why I wanted to share my thoughts I guess...

The song that played along during the last scenes of the movie was something more than a perfect fit to the situation. To my eyes, the person responsible for the whole thing was NOT Donnie but Frank. HE seemed to be the one with the disturbed personality, He seemed to be the one who was feeling lonely and afraid that he would die all alone. I think that when the accident happened his mind started to think backwards. He put himself in Donnie's shoes, so he wanted to avoid all those things he was scared of. He wanted to fix things. It's the way he chose, that showed his schizophrenic mind. Whatever he did through Donnie was ended to be good for some particular reason, for example burning the house of a criminal. To me, Jim Cunningham was not for a fact a child molester. It was his show and his actions that made Frank furious because he presented in a fancy and a totally commercialized way things that to Frank were really important and way too personal.

Frank's girlfriend was Donnie's sister. He knew the family, he wanted to help. The scary rabbit costume was just his Halloween disguise. Remember what Donnie's father said right after the plane collapsed at the beginning of the film? He said that Donnie was lucky not to be in his room by the time of the accident. He recalled something relevant that happened to another person, for whom people said that he was "doomed". I imagine that these words were EXACTLY what was heard about Donnie right after the accident. Frank tries to be God, wishes to be God but he can't. At the cinema scene Donnie asks Frank why he was wearing the suit and Frank asks back the same question. If he was travelling back in time for any reason why would he consider himself and Donnie NOT human?

Well, I don't know. Just a few thoughts. Maybe it's all wrong. I think all this stuff I've been reading don't recant what I understood. I loved the movie though! I'm gonna watch it again and I hope I'll understand better next time...

Till then, I'm ready for discussion...
