Sunday Night Movie Suggestion - El secreto de sus ojos (The secret in their eyes)

Ricardo Darin is Benjamin Esposito, a retired federal justice agent who decides to write a novel. The story is based on a true one, his own story several years ago, when the rape and murder of a young girl haunted his life forever. A tiny detail which was accidentally discovered proved to become a strong evidence for Esposito and his assistant Pablo Sandoval, in order to identify the murderer. After 25 years though, Esposito just can’t let it go.

Juan Jose Cambanella writes and directs a true masterpiece based on the common script of a criminal investigation. He introduces you to a dull world, full of mysterious faces and dark colors, creating an evocative atmosphere manageable to fully absorb your attention. In his film there’re no fancy houses, no gorgeous guys or model girls not even close! Yet, it has actors with a capital A that really represent real people. It has a fully anti-Hollywood perspective which means his world seems actually real too (this comment comes from a big and unrepentant Hollywood fan)! His brilliant work ensured him an Academy Award (Best Foreign Language Film of the Year 2010) along with a lot of discrimination all over the world.

To me one of the biggest surprises was the sensational performance of Guillermo Francella who plays Esposito’s assistant. This man speaks with his eyes and only. I truly believe that this film is going to satisfy even the most demanding fan of qualitative cinema.

Till next weekend… enjoy!

Who's SALT?

Agent Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) is a Russian spy. Or is she not? At least that’s what Orlov, a Russian defector, claims. Salt becomes the number one suspect for the anticipated terrorist attack against the U.S. President. All she can do is run and hide, trying to escape from a highly qualified police force.

Salt’s a tasted recipe; maybe with a little extra salt on the top. It makes it tastier, no doubt about that. It’s a movie of no imagination though. Of course there is a plot. But you can’t depend on a subversive scenario, conspiracies, stunts and a model for an agent, cause it’s all said and done before. No imagination here. If it wasn’t for Angelina and a far from derogatory promotion, I don’t know how many people would actually visit theaters for this kind of movie. An actress like this could easily mix up the image of a seemingly modest film and upgrade it to a much higher level.

Maybe the plot could be described by force as interesting complex; they kind of lost it in the way of presenting it. A good idea should be presented in an inspiring way. That’s what at least I find tempting and promising. And that’s exactly where I believe this movie failed. There was a lack of inspiration on how the story was said. Old fashioned, safe, tasted way. No exceptions, no experiments. Just pay attention: manhunt, chases, dangerous stunts and a skinny woman beating harder than Hulk Hogan in WWF. Hollywood I know, but it’s not tagged as a science fiction movie! There must be an explanation why initially there was a man in Jolie’s shoes and more specifically that man was Tom Cruise. Obviously the character is more congenial to a woman…

If I had to pick an actor it would be really difficult. No weird characters, no special acting skills. With a cast of this range they could easily shoot anything. I don’t want to underestimate anyone’s performance of course. But in this movie the stuntmen had a lot more homework to do…

It may seem contradictory to the previous, but I enjoyed the film. Really, it was fun in that small plant kingdom of my neighborhood summer movie theater. You won’t get bored. Of that I can guarantee. But you’ll probably forget about it a week later. You can wait for the DVD of course. Till then, remind me of the plot please.

Saturday Night Movie Suggestion - Gone Baby Gone

The story begins with shots of a busy street in Boston. Sirens screaming, people in crowds, journalists broadcasting, police everywhere, women crying. A little girl is missing. A four-year old blonde girl has been kidnapped. A young couple, just a few blocks away, is watching the news. Patrick (Casey Affleck) and Angie (Michelle Monaghan) are private investigators, unaware of the fact that few hours later they’re going to be asked to take over the case. The header of the police department Jack Doyle (Morgan Freeman) assigns the case to one of his most experienced detectives Remy Bressant (Ed Harris) in order to help Patrick. After a series of researches and interrogations, there’s still something missing.

Gone Baby Gone is Ben Affleck’s first directing attempt and to my humble opinion couldn’t have done better. The story-transfer from Dennis Lehane’s (“Mystic River”, “Shutter Island”) homonymous novel bears also Ben Affleck’s signature along with Aaron Stockard’s. The film was nominated for an Oscar and won a long list of awards. It was rated R for violence, drugs and language.

The movie goes fast… And I mean fast! Ben Affleck confessed that he skipped many parts of the book in order to fit the film in a reasonable and acceptable time limit. I haven’t read the book so I couldn’t possibly know what he’s cut out, but I do know that he hasn’t put a single superfluous shot even though he had his chance more than once. No procedures, no preparations, no introductions, no babble. Goes straight to the point with quick alternant shots, not interested in the procedure but only the outcome. This specificity in plot with all its difficulties turns out to become his advantage.

The actor-director Affleck gives the leading role to his little brother, who’s not going to disappoint him. Casey’s raucous voice matches perfectly to the narrative character of his role, not to underestimate his laudable performance. Two vets cover the supporting roles, adding an extra quality to the film. What deserves special attention is the amazing performance of Amy Ryan (Oscar nomination) who lost the Academy Award from the equally fantastic Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton – 2008 Awards). She is absolutely disarming, giving her touch and unique interpretation on how a low-mental-status, junkie mother should look, move even feel, when the most remarkable moments are when she speaks through silence. I truly believe she is the finishing touch at an already commendable production.

So let’s see: we have a good story (!), good director (!), good actors (!) is it a good movie then? Well I think it is. It’s not that you haven’t seen one of these before. It’s because you HAVE seen one of these before and yet this one is going to stick with you for a little longer. Huge decisions, ethical quandaries, tiny little humans. End titles and you find yourself wondering: “What would I do?”

Till next Saturday… enjoy!

Saturday Night Movie Suggestion - American History X

On 11/9, a memory day, our suggestion is a movie about violence, racism and hate which unfortunately is always seasonable in any form and in any community.

"American History X" is about Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), an Neo Nazi who was arrested and convicted after the murder of two black guys. Three years later, he re-enters the community as a whole different person. In the meanwhile though, his little brother Danny (Edward Furlong) is walking in his footsteps and becomes a Neo Nazi too, not out of conviction, but out of admiration to his big brother's reputation and the impact he had to others. Derek has to protect Danny and himself from the outcry of his ex fellows, while trying for the first time to accept responsibility for his past and change his future.

A memorable performance of Edward Norton who always manages to maintain his reputation as a great and multidimensional actor along with young (at that time) Furlong who is also astonishing. The film was released on 30 October 1998 (USA) and was nominated for an Academy Award of Best Leading Actor. The movie was rated R for violence, language and sexuality. Definitely NOT for kids, but a MUST seen movie for adults.
So... till next Saturday... enjoy!

Did you know that: Edward Norton gained 30 pounds of muscle for his role.
Source: imdb

Did you also know that: This film uses the word "fuck" 205 times.
Source: imdb

You should definitely learn that: Seth wears a shirt during the basketball game featuring the number 88. This is a naziskin code for HH, or "Heil Hitler," H being the 8th letter of the alphabet. It also refers to a set of 88 precepts written by the neo-nazi leader David Lane. The 88 precepts are rules and concepts that all White Supremacists lived by.

JFK (Saturday Night Movie Suggestion)

" One may smile, and smile, and be a villain "
"Hamlet" William Shakespeare

An Oliver Stone masterpiece about President Kennedy's assassination. Jim Garisson (Kevin Costner) is a District Attorney who reopens the case and finds out that things aren't exactly as the official FBI story presents.

The movie was released in 1991, but before this date it managed to become the apple of discord. A reporter of "The Washington Post" visited the set and wrote a caustic article about the screenplay. Many papers followed especially after the movie release, attacking the accuracy of the historical facts presented in the film, which led to a numb box-office start. The future, though, held much better moments and soon enough the film grew worldwide with more than $205 million! The eight nominations and two Academy Awards (Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing) prove the true value of a great team.

Oliver Stone claims this one to be his favorite film of his own!

Did you know that: The film rated #5 of the 25 most controversial movies of all time. Entertainment Weekly, 16 June 2006.

Waiting for your comments. Till then... Enjoy!

New Movie in Production with... Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie!

Have you ever seen these 2 together in a movie? Well I can't recall one either... So, here there are some photos of the upcoming film "The Tourist" which is going to be released on December 10th 2010 (USA).
The story is about an American tourist Frank (Johnny Depp), who's arriving in Venice confronting personal issues when he bumps into Elise (Angelina Jolie), an active Interpol agent. Beyond the romance that's growing, Frank gets involved into a hide-and-seek game between Elise and her criminal ex, in order to fulfill her mission.
The film has changed its cast several times concerning its two leading actors (initially Charlize Theron was agreed for the part of Elise as well as Johnny Depp has replaced Sam Worthington for the role of Frank), however they finally started shooting so let's just hope there's not going to be another surprise. Angelina Jolie was spotted in Paris while Johnny Depp was shooting in Venice.
There's also some footage of her shooting a scene. Enjoy!

Saturday Night Movie Suggestion POLL - Kevin Costner

Ok is Kevin Costner good enough for a Saturday Night Movie? I think he is... So I'm gonna need your help here. As the SNMS (Saturday Night Movie Suggestions) start counting from next Saturday 4/09 there're going to be 2 movies from which you'll have to chose (I can't possibly decide between those two).

1. "JFK" The story's obviously about President Kennedy's assassination. Jim Garisson (Kevin Costner) is a District Attorney who reopens the case and finds out that things aren't exactly as the official FBI story presents.

2. "Field Of Dreams" Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) is a farmer who gets mysteriously instructed by a voice to build a baseball field on his farm!

We have a winner!! And it's J.F.K.!!!!

The most beloved bitch in the world!

Summer time, reading time… I hope it justifies all those weeks of absence… Accidentally and by word of mouth - via those really famous social networking sites - I’ve heard that Alison Arngrim had just published her book “CONFESSIONS OF A PRAIRIE BITCH”. Who’s Alison Arngrim? Come on! I think everybody knows the notorious not-exactly-polite-mannered blonde girl from the famous TV series “Little House on the Prairie”. Curious as anyone might be I ordered it (I’ve googled it and found some very interesting reviews about it). The result: I’ve spent many afternoons smiling, clouding, frowning and holding my breath, all those without noticing, by the most unexpectedly outstanding writer that my little experience has known. The words pop out of the paper, making every scene so vivid that you could actually see it unfolding in front of your very eyes. You have the picture of the girl that literally grew up inside your living room; her voice is so familiar to your ears. So there she is, although totally different from where you’ve you left her; back to pay a visit after 28 years! Haven’t you missed her? NO?? Where neither had I, she intruded for one more time like she’s always had, although this time - I repeat - is different…

I’m not going to tell the story she presents, for she is so much more qualified to do so and she does that much MUCH better that I could ever deliver. (No I’m not a sponsor or a book reviewer either.) It’s the first time ever referring to a book, which makes it a little more difficult and annoyingly specific, but it’s also the first time I feel the need to do so. Briefly, fearing that I may ruin something, I’ll just say that this woman that lives thousands of miles away and at least I haven’t heard anything about her for decades, managed to touch me and make me think in a way that I never did before (I keep talking about the book to everyone I know for about two weeks now that I’ve finished it).

Ok this is the only thing I’m going to reveal. The girl had being sexually abused by her own brother from the age of six and for the next 5-6 years (!). What you already know (and the only thing that everybody actually knows about her) is that she grew up in front of the whole world, including some years of her childhood and her adolescence, transformed into a TV character and carrying experiences that had to deal with, all by herself. Well, she did well and after so many years she comes out with this astonishing book in which literally describes everything, without beautified words and literary descriptions. She throws it on your face with self-sarcasm and jocularity that leaves you numb and guilty that you can’t help laughing at the wrong point...
Dealing with many difficult situations in her life she’s never stopped helping. The most remarkable achievement is that she managed to help herself and all by herself. She’s been a member of various organizations through the years helping people familiarize with AIDS and HIV. She’s also been truly useful and fully active protestant against child abuse. But she’ll walk you nicely through all those. She’ll show you that nothing is impossible and that there’s always a reason to smile about if you really know where to look for it and, of course, if you really want to find it. She’s going to prove what a genuine bitch can do after all… Trust me, there’re so many things in there you’ll have to discover. And it’s totally worth it. Oh and I’ve heard she’s doing one H**L of a standup comedy show! (If only I didn’t have to make a transatlantic trip to attend one…)

I don’t know in how many languages the book is translated into. You’ll have to search about that one particular detail. But if you speak English – fluently or not – don’t hesitate if you’re not finding a copy in your native language. You’ll finish it without noticing. So, all of you LHOTP fanatics prepare for “The return of Nelie II”! She’s back to stay…

3D Fans; there are news for you!

Are you a 3D fan? Well, if you are there are definitely some good news for you... 3D master James Cameron has announced that he's working on the conversion of his 11-Oscar masterpiece "Titanic" into 3D! The movie is expected to be released in April of 2012, the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking. The director doesn't stop there, as there is a possibility to convert "Terminator 2" as well.

For the fanatics there are more to come... Just a small taste of blockbusters' 3D remakes is Christopher Nolan's "Batman 3" and the most expected Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" Trilogy. To be honest, this last one will be my dream come true. All you have to do is patience. Now that they've started, I'm sure there are more beloved movies to be announced. So keep in touch...

Girl with a Pearl Earring

A 2003 movie based on a novel that author Tracy Chevalier wrote about Johannes Vermeer's masterwork "Girl with a Pearl Earring".

Back in 1665 there's a girl, Griet (Scarlett Johansson), that works in Vermeer's (Colin Firth) house as a maid. She takes over the cleaning of his art studio and after a while she becomes his muse, asked to pose for his famous painting. The whole work has to be done secretly as they had to avoid Vermeer's jealous wife as well as his master van Ruijven who charges him for the painting, acquainting his intentions about the young maid.

The film's beautiful picture, influenced by Vermeer's work and colors, create a unique atmosphere, illuminating a whole era. The roles' distribution is more than successful, leading to Johansson's Golden Globe nomination and of course three Oscar nominations including best Costume Design, Cinematography and Art Direction-Set Decoration. Combined with a very powerful soundtrack, the final result is really impressive. The only ones who might be a little disappointed are those who have read the book, as the ending has been changed as well as the significance of some supporting roles. My advice; see it anyway. It's totally worth it.

Howl

"...Visions! omens! hallucinations! miracles! ecstasies!
gone down the American river!
Dreams! adorations! illuminations! religions! the whole
boatload of sensitive bullshit! ..."
Howl by Allen Ginsberg

In the Summer of 1955 Allen Ginsberg (James Franco) wrote a poem called "Howl". A year later the poem was published and in 1957 led to the prosecution of its publisher and to the famous Obscenity trial. Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman manage to approach the writer, the poem and the trial in different ways, trying to separate the facts and focus on the depiction the poem had on society during time and historical facts.
James Franco gives a remarkable performance, not to mention David Strathairn and Jeff Daniels having their unique fights in court.
The film goes out on 24 September 2010 (US), highly recommended for the enthusiasts...

Thriller LIVE

As one more “late” Michael Jackson’s fan I was “lucky” enough to have Thriller LIVE in my city. So I’m not gonna tell you if I enjoyed or not… There is an obvious answer to that. I’ve heard and still hearing a lot about this particular show or every other show that connects to the King of Pop. My sister called it a memorial. But how can you even go to a tribute show not having the desire to hear about the man that created it.

Anyway, there is a narrator, who gets you in history, starting with Jackson 5. There’s a little boy which is IDENTICAL to Michael at this age. It brings tears in your eyes when you’re watching him performing ABC or I want you back and it seems like the familiar B&W picture has gone live. The first part of the show includes songs from the very beginning to adolescent Jackson 5 and finally Michael’s first solo attempt: Off the Wall. There are 5 or 6 performers including a woman, which by the way performs The way you make me feel! It is a great approach, although I must confess that I was a little disappointed at first. The performers are not impersonating Michael. They are just trying to attribute in the songs the best they can. So you see them dressed like Jackson 5 in these tight, white outfits with the sparkling trinkets and the big collars singing and dancing at the rhythm of Can you feel it with a huge disco ball hanging over their heads. The curtain’s down and you’re just excited to see what happens next…

The second part opens dynamically with his big hits from Thriller and Bad, but also from Dangerous and History. The crowd goes mad! It was the first time to witness standing and dancing audience in that particular room. And believe me; I’ve been there many times… It was an amazing feeling with a climax of Michael’s impersonator who appears on stage to dance Smooth Criminal! Imagine what happened then. He was astonishing (not Michael of course…), but it’s like you’re watching those video clips that you’ve seen so many times and there’re finally right there in front of your very eyes live and 3D! At least that’s what I felt…

As approaching to the end more hits are coming with all the performers on stage including little Michael. Great voices and very good remixes of the songs. You’re going to see Thriller on its glory… and of course the one and only Billie Jean. Even the elderly ones were dancing at this part. It is a substantial 2,5 hour show for those who never had the chance to see Michael performing live. Not to mention the band that plays live through the whole evening.

If the show comes to your city just don’t miss it. I promise you it’ll be a night to remember…

Jonah Hex

Another DC film that caught my eye. There's been so much of them lately but I'm not complaining... Josh Brolin (Milk, No Country for Old Men) is Jonah Hex, a scarred bounty hunter. In order to obtain his freedom he has to stop the dangerous Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich), a terrorist and also Jonah's old enemy.
I'm not expecting much from this one, but I might go see it just out of curiosity. I've read some critics that weren't very flattering... After all Malkovich has made some "interesting" choices so far and I would like to ascertain what intrigued him this time.
The movie's out on 18 June 2010 (US). I may wait for the DVD though...

Nicholas Nickleby

All you Charles Dickens' readers did you know that Nicholas Nickleby is now a movie? Well not now; since 2002... And of course 1947 which is a little more unlikely... To tell you the truth I didn't. And I feel bad about that. The only excuse is that the film was never released in Greece. I don't think it had the proper advertising, which is pretty weird, cause the cast is quite impressive. You'll see names like Christopher Plummer, Anne Hathaway, Jim Broadbent, Juliet Stevenson and Jamie Bell (little Billie Elliot who's grown up!). With a ranking of 7.3 out of 10 in IMDB, we arrive at the conclusion that the movie is anything than bad.
For those who haven't read the book (including me...), the story is about Nicholas, a young man who lost his father and due to financial reasons, he and his family are obliged to travel to London where Nicholas' uncle lives. Uncle Ralph tries to take advantage of their need and sends Nicholas to a school in Northern England, under the management of the inhuman Wackford Squeers. Luckily, Nicholas manages to escape and after a journey full of surprises he returns to London to defend his family.
I don't know about you, but I love 19th century scenery and outfit! First one to watch it, writes his comment here!

Alice in Wonder-land

I like fancy movies. Blockbusters. Multi-colored fairytales. Maybe that wasn't my night. I was a little tired to tell you the truth. The thing is that Alice didn't ravish me. I can't judge Mr Burton though. To me he's a genius. A unique man, which guides me hand in hand on every movie of his and grants me another perspective of the most common things. The 3d glasses helped a lot, but it wasn't exactly what I expected. Johny rocks as always. Anne Hathaway surprised me in a good way. Her clever approach made a perfect couple with Mr. Hatter, although I can smell Tim's interference in that... Don't shoot me but I haven't read the story. I expected to see the oddity of this timeless tale in the movie, but I guess I should have done backwards. Am I the only one who expects a sequel??

You can enjoy the DVD from Tuesday 01/06/2010

El secreto de sus ojos (The secret in their eyes)

An Argentinian federal writes a novel about a murder that happened 25 years ago. As he questions the validity of the facts and the identity of the real murderer he tries to discover the truth, motivated by a slight detail on a photo.
A very clever story full of suspense and a powerful ending even for the most demanding movie fans. Won the best foreign film Oscar (2010).

Julie Andrews - the Gift of Music

Julie Andrews - The Gift of Music

Dame Julie Andrews appeared last night at the London O2 arena for the first time after 30 years. It is well known that she lost some high notes after an operation back in 1997, but this doesn't change the fact that I still get chills every time I watch her performing. She sang yesterday, even though many thought she wouldn't sing at all. As she said, in her exact words: "I can still sing the hell out of the Old Man River". She sang and performed in her very special, unique way that we have been used to for so many years. You know, when you're standing at the audience and you can't see the faces on stage, but you see this one so familiar silhouette and you just know it's Julie. The audience's enthusiastic reception at the moment of her entrance speaks for itself.
About the show, the first half included Rodgers' and Hammerstein's songs, as long as numbers from the films South Pacific, the King and I, the Sound of Music and Carousel. At the second half of the show, she narrated the musical adaptation of Simeon's gift, a children's book she wrote with her daughter Emma Walton. On stage with Julie, were five more singers who were there to deal with the high pitched notes and more demanding songs. The evening ended with Edelweiss from the beloved Sound of Music, the most powerful and moving moment of the concert.
I'm just waiting for the next Julie's performance, hopefully soon enough, with more trademark-songs for her. Till then... enjoy these:

"My Funny Valentine"

The Blind Side

Not really an Oscar movie to my humble opinion... or Bullock's performance either. It is a pleasant film though. Sandra Bullock's far from the roles we've been used to.

An unprivileged teenager, Mike(Quinton Aaron), enters a football college program. With the help of a wealthy family and a mom (Sandra Bullock), who treats him as her own son, not only he manages to improve his poor educational level, but he also succeeds in qualifying for an NCAA scholarship. Based on a true story.

Did you know that: The real Michael Oher (born in 1986) is two years younger than Quinton Aaron (born in 1984).

Did you know that: In an interview to a Brazilian magazine, Sandra Bullock said that during the first couple of weeks of shooting, she thought her acting was so bad she considered dropping out. Bullock stated director John Lee Hancock had worked so hard on the project she didn't want to ruin it. However, she didn't quit it and ended up winning the Best Leading Actress Oscar for her performance as Leigh Anne Tuohy.

The book of Eli

The book of Eli is about a man heading westwards after he survived a holocaust. He carries a sacred book which he has promised to protect with his life. The movie distinguishes for its great western photography and the clever shooting setup, combining style and a very strong expressive perspective. Through his wander to his final destination Eli (Washington) shows great skill, patience and faith as weapons along with his sword and bow. The film includes some very strong scenes despite the fact that it's not to be described as an action movie.
For those who don't stand another disaster film, it's not what it seems... To me (same category...) it was a very pleasant surprise.

Did you know that: Denzel Washington performed all of his own stunts in the hand-to-hand fight sequences.
